Players & Stacks to Consider

Top Captains and Core Flex Plays:

QB Patrick Mahomes: Mahomes will be seeking out some redemption in this Super Bowl LV rematch with Tom Brady and the Bucs. Now, the Bucs do possess an elite pass defense and rank 1st in the NFL in pass DVOA. However, if there is one QB with the arm talent and skills to beat a stout defense, it would be Mr. Patrick Mahomes. He currently ranks 2nd in QB Rating and has thrown a touchdown on 7.3% of his throws, ranking 2nd in the NFL. You could argue that this is not an ideal spot for Mahomes to have a ceiling game, but if youā€™re willing to pay for the premium salary, he does bring a high floor to the captain position.

QB Tom Brady: There is a good chance this game develops into a straight up QB battle where both guys air it out 35+ times tonight. Itā€™s been a slow start to the season for the GOAT, who has yet to throw for multiple TD passes in a single game while averaging 224.5 YPG. However, he will benefit from a significant upgrade to his receiving weapons. Mike Evans returns from his one-game suspension, and the Bucs are also expected to have Chris Godwin (hamstring), Julio Jones (knee), and Russell Gage (hamstring) all available this evening. The Chiefs have been beatable on defense and surrendered the 7th highest completion percentage (68.3%). Brady lives for these big primetime games, so weā€™ll look for him to step up and have the best game of his 2022 season.

WR Mike Evans: The Bucs get much healthier at the wide receiver position this week, but Evans may be the only Bucs WR who is 100% healthy heading into this game. Heā€™s the best bet to see the most targets out of any WR in this game. Itā€™s only a two-game sample size, but he has commanded a strong 13.7-yard aDOT so Brady has been targeting him fairly deep down the field. A large target share with several deep looks is always the upside qualities we hope for in a captain selection. Thanks to his 6ā€™5ā€ frame, Evans is usually a good bet to see some red zone targets as well.

Flex Plays and Leverage Captain Options:

TE Travis Kelce: With a $10,800 FLEX salary ($16,200 CPTN salary), Kelce would need a ceiling game to become the optimal captain. Even against a tough Bucs defense, a ceiling game is certainly possible but I prefer him as a FLEX play instead due to salary restrictions. Mahomes has spread the ball to a slew of receivers this season, but Kelce has been his most consistent target, which is reflected in his team-leading 22.7% TGT%. Kelceā€™s real value comes in the redzone where he has commanded a lofty 30.4% TGT%.

RB Leonard Fournette: Lenny has handled near elite volume this season. Heā€™s averaging 19.0 carries/gm and 3.0 receptions/gm, a volume level that few RBs in the NFL own. Unfortunately, all of those touches have not resulted in huge fantasy scores. With that said, Fournette ranks 2nd among NFL RBs with his 84.5% snap%, so he rarely comes off the field. He could be in line for a nice receiving game against the Chiefs, who have allowed an NFL-high 28 receptions to opposing RBs (9.3 rec/gm). The Chiefsā€™ run defense has been stout (6th in rush DVOA), but volume takes precedence over everything.

WR JuJu Smith-Schuster: Itā€™s difficult to trust any Chiefs pass catcher not named Travis Kelce, but Smith-Schuster does have a pair of eight target games this season, and he ranks 2nd on the team with an 18.0% TGT%. His 73.7% catch% makes him a reliable receiver for Mahomes, and he has just 14 fewer intended air yards than Travis Kelce this season.

Flex Fillers, Fliers, and Sleepers:

K Ryan Succop OR K Matthew Wright: Kickers are always strong FLEX fillers thanks to their low showdown salaries and high median fantasy point projections. Succop has made 8-of-9 FGA this season and is averaging 11.0 FPPG. Wright steps in for the injured Harrison Butker and could see multiple FG opportunities as well. The state of Florida is recovering from the destruction that Hurricane Ian left in its path but the weather in Tampa Bay will be a non-issue tonight with clear skies expected and calm winds around 5 mph.

WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling: MVS (abdomen) holds a ā€œquestionableā€ tag but is expected to suit up this evening. He has led all Chiefs WRs in snap% in all three games this season, and he has garnered seven targets in each of the last two weeks. He has yet to have a huge performance in a Chiefs uniform, but being on the field with Patrick Mahomes always leaves the window open for a big game. Heā€™s being utilized differently than how he was in previous seasons in Green Bay where he was primarily a deep threat. The breakout game may be due now that he has had 12 quarters of live NFL game experience in his new receiving role with Mahomes.

WR Julio Jones: To reiterate, we trust the reports stating that all of these Bucs WRs with questionable injury designations will be suiting tonight. That, of course, includes Julio. Mike Evans excluded, it is a pure guessing game when it comes to predicting which Bucs WRs will see some solid targets. Julio Jones did see the second-most snaps at WR in week one for the Bucs and caught 3-of-5 targets for 69 yards and added a couple of carries for 17 yards. In that game, Julio aligned in the slot on 36% of his routes and ran 55% of his routes on the right perimeter. The Chiefs have given up the 7th most FPPG to receivers in the slot and right perimeter.

Sunday Night Football TD Call šŸˆ

TE Travis Kelce

Stack Concepts:

Note: [*Player Name] indicates captain selection.

*QB Patrick Mahomes, TE Travis Kelce, WR JuJu Smith-Schuster: Your run-of-the-mill CPTN Mahomes double stack. If he ends the night as the optimal captain, then at least two of his receivers will likely be optimal FLEX plays.

*QB Tom Brady, WR Mike Evans, WR Chris Godwin: A GOAT double stack.

*WR Mike Evans, QB Tom Brady, WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling: Mike Evans should be eager to get back into the action following his week three suspension. I donā€™t believe he has beef with any of the Chiefs DBs so he should be able to keep his cool and provide some big upside in what could be a pass-heavy shootout.

*RB Leonard Fournette, QB Patrick Mahomes, WR JuJu Smith-Schuster: Fournette projects for upwards of 20 touches, and, given all of that volume, itā€™s only a matter of time before he busts into the endzone. In this stack scenario, weā€™re predicting that the Bucs play with the lead and feed Fournette his high dosage of touches so weā€™ll run it back with a Mahomes + JuJu stack.

*TE Travis Kelce, QB Patrick Mahomes, K Matthew Wright: The Chiefs only have two rushing TDs this season and the Bucs boast a strong defensive front that has allowed the fewest FPPG to RBs. This stack gives you a chance to gain exposure to every point the Chiefs score in this game.
