Week 3 Breakdown - Shark Huntin' Season

No better feeling!

QB:

  • Matthew Stafford, DET (vs ATL) - CASH Matthew Stafford is a man on a mission to prove he is worth his huge contract signed earlier this year. This game at 50.5 points is currently the 2nd highest over/under of week 3, and is shaping up to be a shoot out between 2 high powered offenses. Potentially setting up to be another come-from-behind win to put onto Staffords' resume. The Falcons defense hasn't been able to stop either the Bears or the Packers this year, and Detroit has a wide variety of weapons on the offense that Atlanta won't be able to stop.

  • Kirk Cousins, WAS (vs OAK) - TOURNAMENTThus far this season Captain Kirk has not even earned the title of Ensign based on his performances. Cousins has something else in common with James T. Kirk, they often both look like they are out of options, backed up into a wall and then miraculously come back with an epic save from nowhere, and make you wonder why you ever doubted them. Cousins last season looked incompetent at times, and then like the best QB ever the following week. This could shape up to be one of those weeks, playing in primetime on a Monday night. The over/under for this game is currently the highest on the slate at 54 points. Each week, Cousins is able to build up more a rapport with Terrelle Pryor Sr., things are going to click soon.

  • Alex Smith, KC (@LAC) - Uncle Pete’s Contrarian PickIn 2 games so far, the Chiefs have shown us that they are willing to take downfield risks, this year we could be seeing a new version of Alex Smith. When you have the fastest guy in the NFL, it makes sense. Alex Smith has averaged 313 yards and 2 passing TDs in the last 2 contests versus the Chargers. The Chargers best cornerback (Jason Verrett), has no timetable to return, and looks unlikely to suit up in Week 3. This will leave for softer than normal pass defense, in what could turn into a shoot out, between 2 above average offenses. The game over/under is set at 47.5 currently, one of the higher lines for the week, meaning the points are going to be out there for the taking.

Other QBs to consider:

  • Cam Newton, CAR (vs NO) - Facing the worst defense in the league.. but Cam still doesn't look right after his shoulder surgery, hard to trust.

  • Josh McCown, NYJ (vs MIA) - Guaranteed garbage time each week. They're going to throw the ball, and it's against one of the worse pass defenses in the league.

  • Derek Carr, OAK (@WAS) - The other side of the highest over/under of the week.

RB:

  • Jonathan Stewart, CAR (vs. NO) - CASH Facing one of the weakest run (and pass) defenses in the league, the New Orleans Saints. He's averaged 16.5 carries in the first 2 games, even with Christian McCaffrey eating into that total a bit. They don't want to wear down McCaffrey too early into his rookie season, so they have said they want to lighten his load a little. Cam Newton still does not look right following the offseason shoulder surgery, so they are going need to continue to lean on the run game to keep the game moving until Newton gets right.

  •  Le'Veon Bell, PIT (@CHI) - TOURNAMENT He's had 2 absolutely terrible games in a row, and this might be your chance to get him at his least owned all season because of that. He wasn't in game shape when he showed up, he didn't play in pre-season, he's probably just about getting into game ready shape now. He's facing a Bears defense that allowed an absurd number of yards and TDs to running backs late last season. The Bears did do a nice job of wrapping up Devonta Freeman in week 1, but they could not stop Tampa Bay last week and they won't be able to stop the Steelers in week 3. Look for Bell to finally show up in week.

  • Theo Riddick, DET (vs ATL) - ContrarianLast Season, the Atlanta defense was extremely soft against pass catching running backs. Nothing has changed so far this season as it has allowed a receiving TD to a running back in each of the first 2 games, and has averaged 71.5 pass yards per game to running backs. This is going to be a high scoring game, and ATL is favored, which means there is a good chance Riddick will be on the field a lot in week 3.

Other RBs to consider:

  • Jay Ajayi, MIA (@NYJ) - Might be banged up, so keep an eye out. MIA will have the lead the entire game, Ajayi will be carrying the ball a lot again.

  • Duke Johnson Jr., CLE (@IND) - Might be CLE's only chance to a win a game this year, and he looks much better than Crowell.

WR:

  • Stefon Diggs, MIN (vs TB) - CASH This is assuming that Sam Bradford is back in action this week, he got in a limited practice Wednesday so it looks like he probably will. Diggs was super efficient in Week 1, catching 7 of 8 targets for 93 yards and 2 TDs. This week the Vikings will be at home facing a potent Tampa Bay offense. Look for Bradford to rely on his top wide out and pepper Diggs with targets.

  • A.J. Green, CIN (@GB) - TOURNAMENT The Bengals fired their offensive coordinator last week, because of how bad they've been through the first 2 weeks, like 0 TDs bad! The good news? If you're taking over as a new offensive coordinator, the first thing you vow to yourself and the team, is that you're going to get the #1 weapon on the team the ball early and often. That weapon is A.J. Green, and he's only had 10 receptions through the first 2 weeks, he could easily double that 2 week total in just this game. Expect a massive emphasis on getting Green the ball in week 3.

  • Mohamed Sanu, ATL (@DET) - CONTRARIAN Julio Jones will be on a boring sleigh ride this week, garnering the attention of Darius Slay the Detroit Lions best cover corner. Matt Ryan is always willing to take what defenses give him. Sanu has proven he has the ability to get open downfield, especially against weaker coverage, expect a lot of targets coming towards Sanu. This game has a good chance to be a shootout, so I like Sanu's odds of having a monster game here.

Other WRs to consider:

  • DeAndre Hopkins, HOU (@NE) - Most targeted WR on the season by far, guaranteeing they need to throw the ball. Downside: Belichick loves to take away the #1 option.

  • Jermaine Kearse, NYJ (vs MIA) - McCowns favorite target, and garbage time is real.

  • Travis Kelce TE @ LAC - Cash After a big game last week, Kelce looks good again this week. The Chargers have a really good defense this year, but their strength lies in their pass rush and cornerbacks, so the Chiefs will have to rely even more on Kelce this week. There aren't a lot of good options at tight end, but it's always comforting when you can fit a guy like Kelce into your lineup.

  • Hunter Henry TE v. KC - Tournament  Week 1 Hunter Henry put up a big fat zero, but I feel like a lot of that was due to how badly the Chargers wanted Gates to get the TD record. Now that Gates has the record look for last week to be more like the norm for Hunter. The Chiefs have faced two great tight ends thus far in Gronk and Ertz. They shut down Gronk, but really it was Eric Berry who shut him down and now he's on IR. Ertz meanwhile almost put up 100 yards, which bodes well for Henry. I like this game to be a great tight end duel.

  • Zach Miller TE v. Pit - CARL's CRAZY PICK Carl's still rooting for Zach Miller. Will you? Let's face it, da Bears offense is horrible, especially with Glennon quarterbacking, but Zach Miller is a lock for volume after the injuries the Bears passing attack has sustained so far this season. Miller has 15 targets so far on the year, and 4 of which came inside the red zone. In a game where the Bears are likely to fall behind early, I expect Zach's opportunities to be plentiful again this week, which is more than you can realistically ask for out of his price tag ($3K on DK!).

Other TEs to consider: Ertz, Doyle

Def:

  • Broncos D/ST @ BUF: Many people will be distracted by other defensive options this week, but look for the Broncos to end up with a lot of points and relatively low ownership. Buffalo is a team that likes to run the ball, and they'll probably run it a lot early, but the way the Broncos looked last week against Dallas makes me believe the Bills won't be running for many yards. The Broncos offense is clicking right now, so the Bills will likely be throwing late while playing catch up, which is music to Von Miller and this secondary's ears. This as safe of an option as you can find this week.

  • Eagles D/ST v NYG: If salary is at a premium, the Eagles are a great option this week. The last three times the Giants visited Philadelphia, the Eagles scored 13+ FPPG (on DraftKings), and they are primed for more of the same this week. The main issue for the Giants has been their offensive line, and this week they get a defense that had 4 sacks in each of their first two games. The Giants are also coming off of a short week, while the Eagles are making their home opener. If you decide to ride with the Eagles, however, don't expect to be the only one rostering them.

Other DEF to consider: Steelers (vs. Bears), Pats (vs. Texans)

INJURIES TO WATCH:

  • Sam Bradford - Limited practice Wednesday, he's likely going to play.

  • Jordan Reed - Chest injury to add to his broken toe, he doesn't look likely to play at this point.

  • Jordy Nelson - Practicing in full for Week 3 against the Bengals.

  • Odell Beckham - Limited at Wednesday's practice, should play and have more of an impact than week 2.

  • Rob Gronkowski - Did not practice on Wednesday. He's probable to play, but you never know with Gronk.

  • Jay Ajayai - Didn't practice on Wednesday, he had 28 carries, and is super injury prone, so keep an eye out here.

  • Rob Kelley - Dealing with a rib bruise, he's looking likely to play.
